"Twenty Below"
I photographed this elk north of Jackson, Wyoming in December 2005. After shooting for most of the morning in 20 below zero temps, I slipped off my gloves to put my camera gear away. With bare hands stinging as I handled the frigid equipment, I realized just how tough these animals must be to endure such extreme winters. Night time lows often drop to -40° F in the mountains of northwest Wyoming. My discomfort was temporary, but this elk would face these extremes all winter.
